How Small Daily Movements Can Prevent Chronic Pain

Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. Matt Eiken of The Mauldin Clinic in Mauldin, South Carolina, breaks down one of the most overlooked strategies for preventing chronic pain: simple, daily movement. You don’t need an intense workout routine or expensive treatments—just consistent, intentional motion throughout your day. Dr. Eiken explains how small habits compound over time to keep your body functioning well and pain at bay. If you’ve been struggling with aches or want to stay ahead of chronic pain, this episode is a must-listen.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Matt Eiken from The Mauldin Clinic here in Mauldin, South Carolina, and today I want to talk to you about something that I honestly think is one of the most underrated tools for staying pain-free. And it’s not a supplement, it’s not a complicated exercise program, and it’s definitely not surgery. It’s movement. Small, simple, daily movement.

Now, here’s the thing. When most people think about preventing chronic pain, they think they need to run marathons or spend hours at the gym. And I get it — that can feel overwhelming. But what the research and what I see every single day in my practice tells me is that it’s actually the little things, done consistently, that make the biggest difference.

Let me break this down for you. Your spine and your joints are designed to move. They need movement to stay healthy. The cartilage in your joints and the discs in your spine don’t have a direct blood supply the way your muscles do. Instead, they get their nutrients through movement — through that compression and release that happens when you walk, when you bend, when you stretch. So when you sit still for hours at a time, those structures start to get starved of the good stuff they need to stay healthy. Over time, that’s when stiffness sets in. That’s when pain starts to creep up on you.

You know what I hear a lot from patients? They say, Doctor Eiken, I didn’t do anything to hurt myself. I just woke up one day and my back was killing me. And that right there — that’s the story of chronic pain. It usually isn’t one dramatic injury. It’s a slow accumulation of not enough movement over a long period of time.

So what can you actually do? Here’s the good news. You don’t need a gym membership to fix this. Start with something I call movement snacks. Every hour, get up and move for just two to three minutes. Walk to the kitchen, do a few shoulder rolls, reach your arms overhead, take a short lap around the office. It sounds almost too simple, right? But breaking up long periods of sitting is genuinely one of the most effective things you can do for your spine.

Here’s what’s interesting — your body adapts to the position it’s in most often. So if you’re hunched over a desk for eight or ten hours a day, your muscles and joints start to adapt to that position. Your chest gets tight, your hip flexors shorten, your upper back rounds forward. And before long, that adapted posture starts to cause pain. Moving throughout the day sends a signal to your body that says, hey, we need to stay flexible, we need to stay strong in multiple positions. It keeps your body from locking into just one pattern.

A few other simple things you can work into your day — morning stretching, even just five minutes before you get out of bed or right after. Gentle movement in the morning helps wake up the joints and get that fluid moving where it needs to go. Walking is also incredible. A twenty-minute walk does wonders for your lower back. And if you work at a desk, pay attention to your posture. Your ears should be roughly over your shoulders, your shoulders over your hips. If you’re noticing yourself drifting forward, that’s a sign your body needs a movement break.

Now, when should you come see someone like me? If you’re already dealing with nagging stiffness, recurring pain, or if you wake up most mornings feeling tight and sore — that’s your body sending you a signal that something needs attention. Catching it early makes a huge difference. A lot of the patients I see could have avoided months of pain if they’d come in when they first noticed something was off.

Chiropractic care works really well alongside these daily movement habits. We can help restore proper motion to joints that have gotten stuck, take pressure off irritated nerves, and give you a plan that’s specific to your body and your lifestyle.

So today, the challenge is simple. Set a timer on your phone to go off every hour. When it goes off — get up, move around, shake it out a little. That’s it. Start there.
