Signs Your Body May Need More Movement

Episode Notes:

In this episode of The Mauldin Clinic podcast, Dr. Matt Eiken explores one of the most common issues he sees in his Mauldin, South Carolina practice: the warning signs that your body isn’t getting enough movement.

Most people associate movement with formal exercise, but Dr. Eiken explains that the signals your body sends go far beyond feeling out of shape or winded on the stairs.

Whether you’re already a patient or just tuning in for the first time, this episode offers practical insight into what your body may be trying to tell you and why listening to those signals sooner rather than later matters.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m doctor Matt Eiken, and you’re listening to The Mauldin Clinic podcast, coming to you from right here in Mauldin, South Carolina. Today we’re talking about something that affects just about every single person I see in my office. And honestly, it affects most people walking around out there who haven’t come in yet. We’re talking about the signs your body gives you when it’s not getting enough movement.

Now here’s the thing. Most of us think of movement as something we do when we exercise. But your body actually needs consistent, everyday movement just to function well. And when it doesn’t get that, it starts sending you signals. The problem is, a lot of us have learned to ignore those signals, or we just think they’re a normal part of getting older. And I want to push back on that today.

So let’s start with the big one. Stiffness. You know what I hear a lot? People tell me they wake up in the morning and it takes them twenty or thirty minutes before they feel like they can actually move around comfortably. And they’ve accepted that as just how mornings are. But that morning stiffness, that creakiness when you stand up, that’s your body telling you the joints and tissues didn’t get enough circulation and movement the day before. When we move, we pump fluid into our joints. We keep things lubricated and flexible. When we sit still for long periods, that process slows way down.

Here’s what’s interesting. Your spinal discs, the cushions between the bones in your back, they don’t have a direct blood supply the way muscles do. They rely on movement to absorb nutrients and push out waste. So when you’re sedentary for too long, those discs start to suffer. And that’s often where back pain and stiffness come from.

The second sign I want you to pay attention to is fatigue. Not sleepy fatigue, but that heavy, dragging feeling even when you’ve had enough sleep. A lot of people chalk this up to stress or age. And sure, those can be factors. But one of the most overlooked causes of chronic fatigue is actually a lack of physical movement. Movement gets your blood pumping, your lymphatic system working, and your brain releasing the chemicals that make you feel alert and alive. When you’re not moving enough, all of that slows down. And your body starts to feel like it’s running on low battery all the time.

The third sign is tension that just won’t quit. Especially in the neck, the shoulders, and the upper back. If you find yourself constantly rubbing your neck or rolling your shoulders trying to work out that tight, achy feeling, that’s a sign. Muscles that are held in one position too long, especially from sitting at a desk or looking at a phone, they build up tension and start to pull on the joints they’re connected to. Over time, that leads to more than just discomfort. It can start affecting how your whole spine is aligned.

Now, here’s some practical advice you can start using today. Set a reminder every hour to stand up and walk around for just two or three minutes. That alone makes a real difference. Try some gentle neck rolls and shoulder circles in the morning before you get your day going. And when you’re watching TV or sitting in the evening, do some simple stretches on the floor. You don’t need a gym or equipment. You just need to give your body permission to move.

And if those signs I mentioned, the morning stiffness, the fatigue, the tension that won’t go away, if those sound familiar, I’d really encourage you to come in and get evaluated. Because sometimes there’s something going on with your spine or your posture that’s making all of this worse. And that’s exactly what we’re here to help with. Chiropractic care isn’t just about cracking backs. It’s about helping your body function the way it was designed to.
