Whether you love the feeling or it makes you cringe, this episode will give you a clearer understanding of what’s really going on inside your body. Tune in to get the truth straight from a chiropractic professional.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Matt Eiken from The Mauldin Clinic here in Mauldin, South Carolina, and today we are tackling one of the most common questions I get asked — probably every single week in my office. And that question is… what is that popping sound? Whether it’s your knuckles, your neck, your back — people either love that feeling or it makes them cringe. And there’s a lot of confusion out there about what’s actually happening and whether it’s safe. So let’s clear the air today and talk about the truth behind cracking joints and chiropractic adjustments.

Alright, so first things first. Let’s talk about that sound. You know what I hear a lot? “Doctor Eiken, am I doing damage when my joints pop?” And the answer — for most people — is no. Here’s what’s actually going on. Your joints are surrounded by a capsule, and inside that capsule there’s fluid. That fluid contains dissolved gases. When the joint moves in a certain way and that capsule stretches, the pressure changes — and those gases release rapidly. That release creates the popping or cracking sound you hear. It’s called cavitation. And it’s a pretty normal mechanical event. No bones are grinding, nothing is breaking. It’s essentially a pressure change inside the joint.

Now, here’s the thing a lot of people wonder — does cracking your own knuckles cause arthritis? You’ve probably heard that from a parent or grandparent. And the research just doesn’t support it. Habitual knuckle cracking doesn’t appear to cause arthritis. It might cause some minor irritation over time if done excessively and forcefully, but the scary arthritis story? That’s largely a myth.

So now let’s talk about chiropractic adjustments specifically — because this is where it gets really interesting. When I perform a spinal adjustment, I’m applying a specific, controlled force to a joint that isn’t moving the way it should. We call that a subluxation — a joint that’s restricted, stuck, or not moving through its full range. That adjustment is designed to restore proper motion to that joint. And yes, sometimes you hear a pop. Sometimes you don’t. And here’s something I tell patients all the time — the pop is not the goal. The pop is just a side effect. What we’re after is restored movement, reduced tension in the surrounding muscles, and better communication between your spine and your nervous system.

That last part is important. Your spine houses and protects your spinal cord. When joints aren’t moving properly, it can create irritation — not just locally, but it can affect how your nervous system functions. Chiropractic care is about restoring that mechanical function so your body can do what it’s designed to do.

Now, a couple of practical things you can do on your own. Movement is medicine. Gentle, consistent movement throughout your day keeps your joints healthy and lubricated. If you’re sitting for long periods, get up every thirty to forty-five minutes and move around. Staying hydrated also matters more than people realize — your spinal discs and joint cartilage depend on good hydration to stay healthy. And please, don’t try to aggressively force your own neck or spine to crack. There’s a difference between natural movement that produces a pop and forcefully manipulating your own spine. Leave the spinal stuff to us.

So when should you come see us? If you’re dealing with stiffness that doesn’t go away, recurring pain in your neck, back, or anywhere along the spine, headaches that seem to come from tension in your neck — those are all signs that your joints may not be moving the way they should. Even if you’re not in pain, a lot of people benefit from getting checked just to make sure everything is functioning properly. Think of it like a dental checkup — but for your spine.

I’d love to see you in the office and do a thorough evaluation to figure out exactly what’s going on with your body. We’re here to help, and we make it comfortable and easy from the very first visit.

Alright, that’s a wrap for today. Thank you so much for spending a few minutes with me. I’m Doctor Matt Eiken at The Mauldin Clinic in Mauldin, South Carolina. If you have questions, give us a call or stop by — we’d love to meet you. Take care of yourselves, keep moving, and we’ll talk again soon.
