Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Matt Eiken, and you’re listening to the podcast from The Mauldin Clinic right here in Mauldin, South Carolina. Today we’re tackling something I get asked about all the time — and honestly, something I love talking about. We’re going to clear up some of the biggest myths about what chiropractors actually do. Because if you’ve ever been curious but a little hesitant, this episode is for you.

So let’s start with the big one. The myth I hear more than any other. And that is — chiropractic care is just for back pain. Now, I completely understand why people think that. Back pain is one of the most common reasons someone walks through my door. But here’s the thing… the spine does a whole lot more than just hold you upright. Your spine houses and protects your nervous system. And your nervous system controls just about everything in your body. So when we work on the spine, we’re really working to make sure that communication between your brain and your body is flowing the way it should. Patients come to us for neck pain, headaches, shoulder issues, hip problems, even things like trouble sleeping or feeling constantly run down. Chiropractic care looks at the whole picture — not just the spot that hurts.

Now, here’s another myth that I want to address — and this one makes me smile every time. People sometimes worry that getting adjusted is going to be scary, or painful, or that something is going to get cracked and broken. I hear that a lot from first-timers. And I get it. If you’ve never been adjusted before, it sounds a little intimidating. But here’s what’s actually happening. When I perform a spinal adjustment, I’m applying a gentle, controlled force to a specific joint in your spine. That popping sound you might hear — that’s just gas releasing from the joint. It’s kind of like when you crack your knuckles. It’s completely normal, and for most people, it feels like a relief. Not painful at all. In fact, most patients leave feeling looser and lighter than when they came in.

Here’s another one worth talking about. Some people believe that once you start chiropractic care, you have to keep coming forever. Like it’s some kind of trap. And I want to be really honest with you about this. There are different levels of care. Some people come in for a specific problem — maybe they tweaked their neck or they’ve got low back pain — and once that’s resolved, they’re done. Others find that regular visits help them stay feeling their best, kind of like going to the gym or getting a regular dental cleaning. That’s called maintenance or wellness care, and it’s completely optional. We work with you based on your goals. There’s no one-size-fits-all plan here.

So what can you do starting today? First — pay attention to your posture. Especially if you’re sitting at a desk or looking down at your phone for hours at a time. Those small habits add up over time and put real stress on your spine. Second — move your body. Even short walks throughout the day can make a meaningful difference in how your back and neck feel. And third — if something’s been nagging you, don’t just push through it and hope it goes away. Get it evaluated. The longer something goes unaddressed, the harder it can be to correct.

And that brings me to this. If you’ve been dealing with pain, stiffness, headaches, or just that general feeling that something’s a little off — I’d love to see you. At The Mauldin Clinic, we take the time to actually listen, do a thorough evaluation, and come up with a care plan that makes sense for your life. No pressure, no gimmicks. Just honest, hands-on care.
